The Story Behind She Who Fell Book Launch Experience

Every event begins with a story.

She Who Fell wasn't simply a book launch. It was the culmination of seven years of healing, transformation and reclaiming the parts of myself that had been hidden for so long.

This was the launch experience for my debut memoir, She Who Fell - a deeply personal story exploring grief, survival, identity, healing and the journey back to myself.

The event was created entirely by me, from the initial vision through to the final details. But what made this experience so significant was not simply that I was bringing a book into the world - it was that I was stepping into a version of myself I had spent years finding again.

Just weeks before the launch, I had emerged from five months of complete exhaustion, a period where life had slowed down and my body had forced me into stillness. After years of inner healing and a long period of feeling disconnected from creativity, I suddenly found myself moving from completion of the book into creating an entire launch experience within just six weeks.

What unfolded was something I hadn't expected.

The launch became the moment where another part of me stepped forward - the event designer, the creative director, the brand designer, the storyteller, the visionary. A part of myself that had always been there, but had been waiting for the space and safety to emerge.

This was not just an evening celebrating the publication of a book.

It was the closing chapter of survival.

It was the little girl who lost her mother at three years old finally being witnessed.

It was the expansion of my voice.

The expansion of my visibility.

The expansion of allowing myself to be seen.

Every element of this experience carried meaning because it wasn't created from a place of simply designing an event.

It was created from lived experience.

From understanding how powerful it is when someone feels seen, connected and part of something meaningful.

She Who Fell became more than a book launch. It became the first expression of a new chapter.

Project Overview

Rather than creating a traditional book launch, I designed an immersive experience where every element and creative decision from the venue styling and branding to the music, lighting and guest journey - reflected the emotional and transformational journey at the heart of the book itself.

The evening invited guests not only to celebrate the publication of a book, but to step inside its story.

The Vision

The intention

Every creative decision began with one question:

How do you make people feel the journey before they even hear the story?

Rather than focusing on a conventional author event, my aim was to create an evening that moved guests emotionally, so people didn't simply attend an event - they felt part of the story.

Everything was carefully woven together so guests experienced the themes of grief, resilience, healing and celebration alongside the reading and speech itself.

Every detail was chosen with intention.

The venue looks absolutely stunning with balloons in the book branding colours, a display table with the book and complimentary gifts for guests and led candlelight on the tables.

The Vision

The vision changed significantly from when I first knew I was having a book launch. At first I was going to do what most authors do - have it in a book shop, just a speech, reading and book signing. But the more I looked into that idea, the more my vision went to something more glamorous and enjoyable. My vision became - to create an experience that people could feel.

Every creative decision was made with one intention: to take guests on the same emotional journey as the pages of She Who Fell. Rather than simply celebrating the release of a book, the event was designed to honour transformation - to move people through reflection, vulnerability, hope, empowerment and celebration.

Music became storytelling, lighting created atmosphere, colour became emotion. The styling wasn't there simply to decorate the space; it was there to support the narrative unfolding throughout the evening.

Every element, from the welcome gifts to the branded details, venue layout and live performances, was intentionally chosen to help guests feel immersed in the experience rather than simply attending an event.

The result was an evening where creativity, emotion and storytelling worked together as one cohesive design.

"Watching the vision become reality - every detail had been carefully considered before the doors opened."

Brand Identity

Creating the visual identity for She Who Fell was one of the most rewarding parts of the entire project. It allowed me to reconnect with my graphic design background and bring together years of creative skills in a deeply meaningful way.

Rather than creating branding specifically for the event, I expanded the existing identity of She Who Fell into an immersive visual experience. The colour palette was drawn directly from the book cover which I also designed - using deep blue, turquoise, white and gold consistently throughout the venue styling, printed materials and guest experience to create a cohesive visual language. Every branded element was intentionally designed to feel like part of the same story, ensuring guests experienced the identity of She Who Fell long before the first reading began.

Custom branding created for the project included:

Book Cover Design

Interior Book Design and Layout

Event Posters and Promotional Flyers

Social Media Banners and Post Graphics

A2 Easel Boards

TV Display Banner

Custom She Who Fell bookmarks

For me, this wasn't simply about creating graphics. It was about translating the emotional journey of the book into a visual identity that people could see, recognise and experience throughout the evening.

Venue Design and Styling

The venue was designed to feel intimate, welcoming and emotionally engaging. Rather than filling the room with excessive decoration, the styling focused on atmosphere. I created a mock up of the venue after visiting it twice.

I needed to know how the lighting worked, how the sound connected to my tablet for playlists and where the tables were going to be best placed for singer visibility, dancing and the gifts, book and signing tables to be the main focus of the room. Also where the She Who Fell light boxes would compliment everthing else.

The decoration focus was LED candlelight on tables and warm lighting, balloon installations, gold star backdrop for singer area, She Who Fell light boxes and carefully curated display tables.

The aim was to allow guests to feel they had stepped into the world of the book rather than simply attending an event.

Guest & Experience Design

The experience of the evening was designed to take guests on the same emotional journey as She Who Fell itself.

Rather than creating a traditional book launch, every stage of the event was carefully sequenced to mirror the arc of the story - from pain and survival, through truth and vulnerability, and finally into hope, expansion and celebration. The intention was for guests not simply to hear the story, but to experience it emotionally through atmosphere, music, pacing and meaningful moments.

Guests arrived to a carefully curated playlist that introduced the themes of the evening before the live music began. Each song had been intentionally chosen because it had formed part of my own healing journey, with many of them referenced throughout the book itself. Music became another storyteller, carrying the emotional thread between each part of the evening.

The first live performance prepared the space before flowing naturally into my author talk and reading. Following the speech, Mirrors by Justin Timberlake reflected the central theme of recognising ourselves through the people and experiences that mirror our deepest wounds.

After reading the most personal chapter of the book - the story of the little girl who lost her mother at three years old and spent decades believing she had to carry the pain of others, I Didn't Know My Own Strength by Whitney Houston marked the emotional turning point, honouring the journey from survival into self-worth.

As the evening moved into book signing, guests entered a quieter space for reflection, conversation and connection while another carefully curated playlist continued the story. The final live set then shifted the atmosphere completely, celebrating freedom, joy, confidence and new beginnings - allowing the evening to close not in grief, but in expansion.

Alongside the storytelling, every guest received thoughtfully selected keepsakes to continue the experience beyond the event. These included affirmation cards, branded bookmarks with QR codes linking back to the book, music-inspired bag charms, branded pens, thank-you gift bags and, for those purchasing the book, personally signed copies. Each detail was chosen to ensure guests felt welcomed, valued and connected - not simply as attendees, but as part of the journey itself.

The entire guest experience was built around one intention: To create an evening where people didn't just witness a book launch, they felt the story.

Key moments of the guest journey are below.

Creative Direction & Event Delivery

Bringing the vision for She Who Fell to life required far more than designing a beautiful event. Every stage of the project was creatively directed and personally managed from initial concept through to the final guest experience.

Working alongside carefully selected collaborators, I led the creative direction for every aspect of the event while ensuring every detail aligned with the emotional journey at the heart of the book. Rather than simply coordinating suppliers, each person involved became part of the wider vision.

The live vocalist, was intentionally chosen not only for her voice, but for her willingness to understand the story behind the event. Together we collaborated on the musical journey of the evening, carefully selecting songs, planning transitions, rehearsing beforehand, and weaving storytelling between performances so that the music became another voice within the experience.

Every collaborator was chosen with equal care. The venue itself was selected after viewing multiple locations until I found the space that reflected the atmosphere I wanted to create. The photographer was chosen through trusted recommendation and briefed to capture not only the event itself but the emotion, atmosphere and meaningful details throughout the evening. Printers and suppliers were sourced to ensure every branded element from posters and bookmarks to easel boards, display materials and decorative styling - remained visually consistent throughout.

Alongside the creative direction, I managed every stage of event delivery, including venue liaison, supplier coordination, branding production, event scheduling, technical planning, presentation setup, guest flow, styling, music cue planning and live event management. On the day itself I directed the venue setup, coordinating family members and helpers so that every task flowed naturally from one to the next, allowing the original vision to come together exactly as intended.

Although guests experienced a calm and seamless evening, the success of the event came from months of planning, creative decision-making and thoughtful coordination behind the scenes. Every decision, large and small, was made with one intention: to create an experience that felt authentic, emotionally meaningful and beautifully connected from beginning to end.

Reflection

Although this project celebrated the publication of a book, it also revealed something unexpected. It confirmed a passion for creating experiences where people don't simply attend an event, they feel it.

The project became the foundation for Hayley Stoner Creative Experiences and continues to shape the approach behind every future collaboration.
